The Story of Marnka & Co.

Our story

Born from Country. Built with purpose. Carried in language. This is the story of Marnka & Co.

How it began

A clear-eyed question

A brand built from the ground up.

Marnka & Co. was born from a genuine love of coffee and a clear-eyed question: why weren't more specialty coffee brands being led by Indigenous Australians?

Built from concept to a trading e-commerce operation, Christine has established the brand, structured its supply and Wholesale channels, built its online retail presence, and developed partnerships with cafés, corporate clients, government, and events. As a Supply Nation Registered business, Marnka & Co. is positioned to participate in Indigenous Australian procurement and the growing Indigenous Australian business economy.

Inspired by Country

One of the most ancient and significant landscapes on Earth.

The Arabana people are the Traditional Custodians of the Lake Eyre Basin. At its heart is Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre): a vast, shimmering expanse in the far north of South Australia that has sustained life, story, and culture for thousands of generations.

When the rains come and the waters flow, something extraordinary happens. The lake floods, and with that flooding comes an explosion of life. This duality, the quiet and the teeming, the stillness and the flood, is at the heart of how the Arabana people understand Country. And it is at the heart of this brand.

Kati Thanda

The Great White Silence

Stillness is not emptiness. It is presence.

Most of the time, Kati Thanda is a great white silence: a salt lake so flat and still it seems to hold the sky. Yet it is never truly silent. The winds surround you, and Country speaks to you, if you listen. It is the weight of deep time, and the patience of a Country that has endured everything and remains.

Kati Thanda is under great threat. Climate change, water extraction, and industrial pressure are disrupting the ancient cycles that make this place what it is. Marnka & Co. exists, in part, to raise that awareness: to bring Country into spaces it had never been, and to remind people that what we consume has consequence.

The Mound Springs

Sacred places of ceremony, creation, and life.

Across Arabana Country, mound springs rise from deep beneath the earth, fed by the Great Artesian Basin, one of the largest and oldest underground freshwater reservoirs on the planet. These springs have sustained life here for thousands of years.

They are sacred to the Arabana people: places of ceremony, of creation stories, of life.

The meaning of Marnka

Marnka

Arabana · abundance

Not excess. Not accumulation. But the deep, grounded abundance that comes from living in right relationship with the world around you.

Marnka reflects the natural abundance of Country and the responsibility to take only what is needed, share what is given and give back in return. It speaks to presence, mindfulness, gratitude, joy, and peace: a word that runs counter to consumerism, and yet sits at the centre of a brand built to be beautiful, honest, and purposeful.

The language on the bags

Why our blends speak Arabana

Every word of Arabana that moves through the world is a word that survives.

Arabana is the language of Christine's people, from Country around Kati Thanda in far north South Australia. Today the language is being carried forward by the Arabana Aboriginal Corporation through cultural and language camps. Marnka & Co. wants to share Arabana with many more people. Naming every blend in the Arabana language is our part in that resurgence, taking the language beyond Country and into kitchens, cafés and conversations across Australia.

Language lives when it is spoken and shared. When you ask for a Maka at the café, or decide at the kitchen bench that it is a Waangara afternoon, you are speaking Arabana. You may not have set out to, but you are, and the language is a little more alive because of it. That is why these names mean so much to us. They are not decoration. They are chosen with care and deep respect, because language is how Country speaks.

Our guiding principles

Honour. Share. Reciprocate.

These three principles are woven through everything we do, and the language on our bags is where you can see them most clearly.

01

Honour

We honour culture and language by naming every blend in the Arabana language, with care and deep respect, and by carrying the stories of Country in every bag. Honouring language is honouring the people who have kept it alive.

02

Share

We share Arabana with everyone who opens a bag, pours a cup or asks what a name means. Each blend is an invitation to learn a word, say it out loud and pass it on. Language grows every time it is shared.

03

Reciprocate

Reciprocation comes full circle through you. Every order, every piece of feedback and every story you share back with us gives something in return, and keeps language and Country in the conversation. Share your feedback
